NU softball goes 2-2 against Wayne, Grand Valley; Baseball NU 2-1 against PNW


The Northwood softball team swept Wayne State on Thursday and was swept by Grand Valley State on Friday to move to 18-10 overall.

Thursday against WSU, Northwood rallied twice to win 5-4 and 3-2.

Emily Cox took the victory in relief in Game 1, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing no runs on two hits and a walk.

Haley Frank homered and drove in two runs for the Timberwolves, while Brittany Steimel also homered, Alexis Koehler went 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Gianna Fantin and Delanie Grundman both doubled and drove in a point.

Cox (3-0) picked up another relief victory in the last drink, going two scoreless innings and giving up one hit and no walk.

Grundman went 2 for 3 for NU, while Steimel, Krista Moe and Madelin Skene each drove in a race.

Friday against GVSU, the Timberwolves were down 9-5, 8-0.

Shayna Frank (9-5) suffered the loss in Game 1, going six innings and allowing six runs on six hits and two walks.

Emily Mankel went 3 for 4 for NU, while Gabby Schloop went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, Koehler went 2 for 3 and scored twice, and Skene doubled and drove in a race .

At the last drink, Hailey Leister (4-4) took the loss after allowing four runs, only one earned, on five hits in two innings.

Karlie Moore had the Timberwolves’ only hit in the game.

Northwood will host Davenport on Saturday at noon.


The Northwood baseball team lost 21-19 to Purdue Northwest on Thursday, then parted ways with the Pride on Friday, losing Game 1 2-1 and winning the nightcap 18-0.

Thursday, Derek Clark (4-1) suffered his first loss, giving up 10 runs, including six earned, on nine hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings.

Ben Clark went 3 for 5 with four RBIs for the Timberwolves, while Joey Johnston had two hits, including a home run, and five RBIs, Matt Magno had three hits and an RBI, Jacob Rybicki drove in three runs and scored three times, Myles Beale homered, drove in two runs and scored three times, David Jeffers had two hits and an RBI and scored three times, and Rhett Evans had two hits safe with a brace and scored twice.

In Friday’s opener, Cam Schuelke (2-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk in six innings.

Evans went 2 for 3 for NU.

At the last drink, Jayden Dentler (4-2) took the win, going seven shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks, while striking out 10.

Johnston was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and scored twice, while Beale had two hits with three RBIs and scored twice, Khale Showers had two hits and two RBIs, Camden Fisher had one homer and drove in three runs, Jeffers had two hits and an RBI and scored twice, and Magno had a hit, three walks, an RBI and three runs scored.

NU will conclude its series with PNW on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Hammond, Ind.
