Grand Valley State wins 2021 DII Women’s Football Championship

Grand Valley State has added to its already impressive history. The Lakers are once again the DII national women’s football champions, beating Saint Rose 3-2 in double overtime. This is the Lakers’ seventh national title and the third time they have won multiple titles in a row.

Kennedy Bearden wasted no time, scoring his second goal of the day in the opening seconds of second overtime. It was Bearden who assisted on the 2019 golden goal to give the No.6 Lakers the title and Saturday was his turn to be golden. The Lakers are your 2021 National Champions. 4:27 PM Grand Valley State 3, Saint Rose 2 | Final – Grand Valley State didn’t want to see a penalty shootout. Just seconds after the start of second overtime, the Lakers set their seventh DII DII Women’s Football Championship record.

4:24 p.m. Grand Valley State 2, Saint Rose 2 | Watch Live – One less overtime, another to come. I don’t know how this one didn’t get stowed away as a ball went up and down the goal line, but after examination it never crossed. Hold on tight for the thrilling finale.

4:05 p.m. Grand Valley State 2, Saint Rose 2 | Watch live – 90 minutes was not enough. Grand Valley State and Saint Rose are heading into extra time in a grand home-and-back final so far.

3:53 p.m. Grand Valley State 2, Saint Rose 2 | Watch Live – What a battle between two heavyweights. Less than five minutes later, Saint Rose equalized as Lauren Amerena found Ciera Lundy for the equalizer.

3:46 p.m. Grand Valley State 2, Saint Rose 1 | Watch live – And the Lakers are back on top. Cecilia Steinwascher gave Grand Valley State a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute.

3:30 p.m. Grand Valley State 1, Saint Rose 1 | Watch Live – We’re tied at Colorado Springs. Mia Klammer puts the Golden Knights on the board and we have a new game with 22 minutes left in the second half.

Half time: Grand Valley State 1, Saint Rose 0 | Watch live – Some nice saves from both keepers, but Bearden’s goal in the first five minutes of play remains the difference. The Lakers need to keep Saint Rose off the board for 45 more minutes to practice.

2:35 p.m .: Grand Valley State 1, Saint Rose 0 | Watch live – After a quick strike from Grand Valley State, both teams tightened the defense and it went scoreless for the last 20 minutes. Each team has six shots, two of which are on goal. Bearden has been the difference so far. Twenty minutes remained in the first half.

2:10 p.m .: Grand Valley State 1, Saint Rose 0 | Watch Live – It didn’t take long. Less than five minutes into the Lakers Kennedy Bearden goes over the head of the Saint Rose goalkeepers for the 1-0 lead. There is a lot of time left here.

1:40 p.m. – Welcome to the last game of the 2021 DII women’s football season. The good news is the weather is good. The bad news is, it’s 39 degrees. Saint Rose and Grand Valley State both played in the 2019 quarterfinals in Pittsburgh when it was snowing and in the 20s all weekend. The sun should be a welcome advantage.
