Judith Essemiah of Grand Valley State University went back to back.
The junior from Amsterdam, Netherlands, defended her NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championship in the hammer throw Thursday at the national meet in Grand Valley.
Essemiah took top honors with a throw of 63.31 yards, making her the only Division II woman to go over 63 yards this season. Essemiah beat a pair of Wayne State College of Nebraska pitchers in Mckenzie Scheil (59.57) and Brooklynn Chipps (58.51) to win the title.
It was the second straight year that Essemiah had defeated Scheil for the championship. Essemiah shot 62.62 to rank first a year ago. She also won the Women’s Shot Put Championship at the 2022 NCAA DII Indoor Championships.
The action continues Friday and wraps up Saturday in Grand Valley. The Lakers women are tied for second in team standings with the University of San Francisco Academy of Art behind Wayne State, 14-10. The GVSU men are sixth with nine points.
