Scammers are targeting Imperial Irrigation District customers with what appear to be legitimate business numbers, the Irrigation District said Wednesday.
Callers have contacted customers in the district with legitimate business numbers in the past few days, threatening to cut power if payments are not made quickly, according to district officials.
When customers return these scam calls, they reach the district water division office.
The district urged customers to contact their customer call center if they are concerned about their bills rather than directly returning calls directed to them.
“If a call looks suspicious, it’s more than likely,” said Marcy Rivera, who leads the district’s claims and investigations unit. “It’s fine to be diligent and hang up. Just because you see what appears to be a legitimate number, don’t assume anything. If you pick up the phone and call us directly at our call center, not only will we let us know if we tried to reach you, but we will do our best to help you.”
The district has notified law enforcement of the issue and is asking customers to provide any information that may help stop these scam calls.
The district call center can be reached at 800-303-7756.
