Battle of the Valleys Student Senate Fundraiser – Grand Valley Lanthorn

The Battle of the Valleys is back and in full swing this year at Grand Valley State University. The Student Senate has already started raising funds for the event. This will be the first year since 2018 that the Battle of the Valleys will be held.

The Battle of the Valleys is a two-part competition between GVSU and Saginaw Valley State University, there is a competitive fundraising week and a football game, both against SVSU. These two weeks will be filled with games and events to help raise money for this year’s recipient, a nonprofit called I Understanding-Love Heals.

I Understanding-Love Heals is a Grand Rapids-based nonprofit that seeks to build support and community for those affected by mental health issues or suicide. The organization was founded by Vonnie Woodrick after her husband died by suicide.

“When the Student Senate looked for a beneficiary, we wanted to find an organization whose mission and vision matched the values and virtues we stand for as an organization,” said Eldon Pearson, vice president of public relations for the Student Senate. . “We wanted to support an organization that had a direct impact on the Grand Rapids area and its surrounding communities, and that would work closely with us for Battle of the Valleys.”

These events are a great way for students to get involved in the Battle of the Valleys as well as helping Grand Rapids based nonprofits, especially in recent years with the increase in mental illness. It’s a great way to not only have fun, but also give back to the community of Grand Rapids and even Grand Valley.

“The mission, I understand, as a nonprofit was near and dear to many of our hearts as students and senators,” said Pearson. “Over the past few months, has been an incredible, welcoming and committed partner for Battle of the Valleys. This fundraising contest for us is more than a contest, we are the ones working to make the vision a reality. We believe so much in their mission and the future they believe in, the one where mental health issues and suicide are eradicated from our community.
